NewsGuild re-running presidential election Nov. 12

Tuesday, October 22, 2019 by The Guild

Earlier this year, The NewsGuild held a hotly contested unionwide election for president. Incumbent candidate Bernie Lunzer faced a challenge from Los Angeles’ Jon Schleuss.

Schleuss and others challenged the results of the election, and a review from the Sector Election and Referendum Committee showed major problems with the way ballots were distributed, particularly to the Guild’s Canadian members. For that reason, the The NewsGuild is re-running the election this fall.

Most members of the Buffalo local will vote by in-plant balloting from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 12 in The News’ fifth-floor cafeteria. Bring a membership card, driver’s license or some other form of ID with you.

Members who do not work out of The News’ downtown building will receive their ballots by mail.

The meeting has been rescheduled for 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, and there is a lot to discuss! Please mark your calendar and plan to attend. We will be providing pizza and drinks.

Find out the answers to these burning questions:

    • What do I do if I think The News is targeting me for discipline?
    • I heard The News is launching a new Tonawanda Sun paper. What’s up with that?
    • How did the Guild-sponsored Cash Cow Contest turn out?
    • Upcoming negotiations – Is it really that time again already?

In addition, find out more about an important joint effort between the Guild and newsroom management to provide customized digital skills training to all editorial members.

Guild to host NewsGuild Multi-District Council meeting in June

Tuesday, May 30, 2017 by The Guild

The Buffalo Newspaper Guild will host the NewsGuild-CWA’s 2017 Multi-District Council on June 24 to 25 in the Millennium Hotel in Cheektowaga.

The meeting, said NewsGuild Executive Vice President Marian Needham, will serve as an important precursor to the CWA Convention and Guild Sector Conference to be held in Pittsburgh in August.

The meeting will feature a Saturday workshop to familiarize members with a CWA-wide project that will help officers and organizers reach out to current and prospective union members.

“The Guild’s Special Assignment Organizers will conduct a skills-building workshop to help local leaders increase the effectiveness of their outreach to members and non-members alike, to help build our numbers and increase the strength of our union,” Needham said.
